17th Chinese Young Women in Science Award holds award ceremony

The award ceremony of the 17th Chinese Young Women in Science Award was held in Beijing on July 15, 2022.

Shen Yueyue, vice-chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) and president of the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF), Huang Xiaowei, secretary of the leading Party members group, vice president and first member of the Secretariat of the ACWF, Zhang Yuzhuo, secretary of the leading Party members group, vice president in charge of daily work and chief executive secretary of the Secretariat of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), Cao Shumin, deputy director of the Office of the Central Cyberspace Affairs Commission,  vice-president of the ACWF (part time), Chen Wei, vice president of CAST and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), Wang Xiaoyun, director of the Supervision Committee of the 17th Chinese Young Women in Science Award and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Duan Wenhui, academician of the CAS, Shu Wei, member of the leading Party members group and executive secretary of the Secretariat of CAST, and Cui Ying, deputy secretary general of the National Commission of UNESCO, attended the award ceremony and presented awards to the winners.

 

Zhang Yuzhuo delivered a speech on behalf of the organizer. Fabrice Megarbane, chief executive officer of the Shanghai-based L'Oréal (China), delivered a video speech. Wu Haiying, member of the leading Party members group, vice-president and member of the Secretariat of the ACWF, presided over the award ceremony. Shen Yueyue addressed the ceremony.

 

Shen Yueyue stressed that female scientists must fully implement President Xi Jinping’s instructions and strive to be vanguards in the efforts for self-reliance and strengthening in science and technology to enhance independence, autonomy and security of the nation’s development.

 

Shen encouraged female scientists to be pacesetter to scale the heights of science and technology and set models for sci-tech professionals of the nation.

 

Zhang Yuzhuo noted that the program of Chinese Young Women in Science Award set an important platform for outstanding female scientists to stand out.

 

9 winners of the award have been elected academicians of the CAS and the CAE, and 3 winners have won the L'Oréal-UNESCO for Women in Science Award, added Zhang.

 

Zhang expressed his hope that female scientists could become practitioners of the Spirit of the Chinese Scientists, scalers of scientific peaks, and promoters of global sci-tech cooperation to build global talent center and innovation highland.

 

On behalf of the Evaluation Committee, academician Chen Wei introduced that under the principles of bearing in mind the country’s most fundamental interest, carrying forward a good style of study, and targeting frontier scientific research, 46 members of the Supervision Committee finalized the award list consisting of 20 individual winners, 5 research groups and 5 candidates for the program of Future Female Scientists.

 

As representatives of the winners, Fu Qiaomei and other 2 scientists,said in their speeches that they must follow President Xi Jinping’s instructions and integrate their personal pursuit with the cause of the Party and the country, and contribute their wisdom and strength to realize the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation.

 

Jointly initiated by the ACWF, CAST, the China National Commission for UNESCO and L'Oréal China in 2004, the Chinese Young Women in Science Award has awarded a total of 164 female scientists.

 

It is the first time the program presents awards to research groups, and a total of 5 research groups were awarded this year.
